Wimbledon 2015 : First day story

Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova made winning starts on day one of wimbledon 2015 and enters in the second round with an easy win over their competitors.

The Defending men’s champion Novak Djokovic opened the play on Centre Court and led all the way for a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.

World no 1, Djokovic said,”It’s great to be back. This is the cradle of our sport, Centre Court. It doesn’t get any better than Wimbledon.

“I am privileged and honoured to open this year’s Wimbledon Centre Court as defending champion. It really is a special feeling.”

French Open champion Stan Wawrinka made comfortable win over Portugal’s Joao Sousa. Swiss hits 25 aces to claim 6-2 7-5 7-6 (7-3) straight set win against the Sousa on the centre count.

World no four did not face a break point in win over Sousa on Monday. The match was a replay of the pair’s 2014 Wimbledon first round, which the Swiss won in straight sets as well. Wawrinka will face Victor Estrella Burgos in the second round.

Wawrinka told BBC Radio 5 live ,”It was a great start and I’m happy to win the first match here. Winning the French Open has given me a lot of confidence for sure, but everyone starts from zero in this tournament.
“I’m playing some of the best tennis of my career, every piece of the puzzle is fitting together and hopefully there’s still more to come from me.”

Croatia’s US Open champion Marin Cilic beats Japan’s Hiroki Moriya 6-3 6-2 7-6 (7-4), while the semifinalist of the last year Wimbledon Canadian Milos Raonic defeated Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain in four sets.

Heather Watson’s match with Caroline Garcia was suspended due to bad lights after British No 1 got back into the match at 1-1.They were offered the chance to play on but both players have chosen not to carry on. They will resume today for the final set.
