Sania Mirza and her Swiss partner Martina Hingis won women’s doubles Grand Slam title at Wimbledon 2015 in June. It was Sania’s first ever grand slam title.
The Sports Ministry today confirmed Sania Mirza has been recommended for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna but the final decision depends with only the Awards Committee. She also became world number one in women’s doubles with her partner Martina Hingis before winning the Grass Court major at Wimbledon 2015.
Ajit Sharan the Sports Secretary said the Sports Minister Sarbanada Sonowal has recommended Sania for the highest honour given for achievement in sports.
Ajit Sharan said,
“We had got a late recommendation from AITA but the Minister accepted that and recommended the same to the Awards Committee. But the final decision to give the honour rests with the Awards Committee.”
Sania will compete with Squash player Deepika Pallikal and discus thrower Vikas Gowda for the prestigious award.
