Atletico Madrid bid an emotional farewell to the Vicente Calderon on Sunday where Diego Forlan, Fernando Torres and Gabi all turned out for the home side against the world XI including the great Ronaldinho, Clarence Seedorf and Riyah Mahrez and played the final ever match at the historic ground before its demolition.
Atleti are set to move to their new modernized stadium Wanda Metropolitano thus ending their 51 year Vicente Calderon’s Journey where the club registered 80% of their titles.
To mark the occasion, a team comprised of club legends and current players took on a world legends side in front of over 51,000 supporters in the Spanish capital.
Diego Forlan, Fernando Torres and Gabi were among the star names to turn out for Los Rojiblancos, while Clarence Seedorf, Riyad Mahrez and former Barcelona legend Ronaldinho featured for the visitors.
The home side took an early lead when Torres chipped the ball over Colombia’s legendary goalkeeper Rene Higuita but it was World XI who stood winners in the end. The score rested at 5-4 in the favour of World XI.
The cheers and happiness turned into emotional scenery at the end as Atleti’s supporters say final goodbye to the ground where they have cheered their team since 1966.
