Lionel Messi has equalled Raul’s all-time Champions League scoring record, netting his 71st goal in a 2-0 victory against Ajax. Messi has made it to 71 in just 90 games, while Raúl took 142 games.

Cristiano Ronaldo is also in the race for the record having scored 70 Champions League goals in 106 appearances in the competition. He failed to add any goal to his tally in Real Madrid’s 1-0 win over Liverpool on Tuesday.

“I am happy for Leo, for the work he does for the team and because he is the number one, the best,” Xavi told reporters.

Messi when asked about the achievement said,”I am happy, the truth is this was not most important today. That was to the get the important three points to try and keep fighting with Paris to win the group. But I am happy to have achieved it.”

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique was also focused on the game, saying only, “Messi is the best player I have seen in my life.”
