Christian Benteke joined  Aston Villa on a four-year deal for a fee believed to be around £7m in 2012 and has scored 49 goals in 101 appearances. He also scored 12 goals in 12 games at the end of 2014-15 season to help keep Villa in the Premier League and has two year left on his contract with them.

Liverpool first made contact with Villa for the Belgium International with a valuation between £20m and £25m but Villa were never interested in dealing at that price. The Belgium international was also believed to be cashed by Manchester United and he cryptically favourited a tweet about a potential move to Manchester United. However, The Reds boss Brendan Rodgers after selling Sterling to Manchester City for £49m is prepared to make a worthy bid for Christian Benteke. Thereby Liverpool has diverted the landing of Benteke toward Anfield by making a fresh offer of £32.5 million and dented United’s efforts to bring the 24-year-old to Old Trafford.

Rodgers said that despite the departure of England forward Sterling Liverpool could still attract top players. He said, “Players are always going to want to come to Liverpool, it’s such an iconic club, it’s a great club,”

“The challenge for us is to get back in amongst the top teams, hopefully that continues to attract players.”
