Adam Johnson sacked for an accusation of child sex

Adam Johnson has been sacked by Sunderland after pleading guilty for an account of sexual activity with a child and a charge of grooming.

The Sunderland and England footballer Adam Johnson has pleaded guilty to kissing a 15-year-old schoolgirl after grooming her over the internet.

The 28-year-old winger admittance of grooming and sexual activity with a 15-year-old schoolgirl shocked the club officials on Wednesday. The club terminated his contract immediately after he was dropped for Saturday’s Premier League match against Manchester United.

He will stand trial at Bradford Crown Court on two further counts of sexual activity with a child. The player has admitted one count of sexual activity with a child and one of grooming at Bradford crown court. He denies two other counts of sexual activity with a child and is due to go on trial on Friday.

Sunderland released a brief club statement on Thursday evening, which read: “In light of Adam Johnson’s guilty pleas, the club has today terminated his contract with immediate effect. The club will make no further comment.”
