Mahela Jayawardene to retire from Test cricket

Sri Lankan star batsman Mahela Jayawardene is to retire from Test cricket next month. After an outstanding career of over 17 years, former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene is set to bid adieu to Test cricket. The 37 year old, one of the greatest batsmen in the world will play his last test match against Pakistan in August.

Jayawardene made his debut for Sri Lanka against India in August 1997. He has played 145 Tests, scoring 11493 runs, 48 half centuries and 33 centuries at an average of 50.18 and took 197 catches, with the highest score of 374 against South Africa.

Jayawardene, who retired from the T20 format after winning the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in the past recent months along with his fellow Kumar Sangakkara. Jayawardene will, however continue playing One Day internationals, making himself available for next year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Former captain Jayawardene said: “It was not an easy decision to make, given that it has been a great privilege and honour representing my country during the past 18 years.

“But I believe this is the right time.”
